The non-profit Community Home Trust has been one of the biggest contributors to the affordable housing community since its establishment. Recently, the organization made two big announcements: a bold partnership and a new executive director. When Community Home Trust bought the Landings at Winmore neighborhood in 2017, it expanded the non-profit’s reach to affordable housing for rent. But recently, the infrastructure was beginning to risk falling into disrepair.

Homeless couples with children needing emergency shelter soon will have more options to stay together, thanks to a new program at the Salvation Army Center of Hope. The shelter, which previously accepted only women and children, has added rooms for entire families, including fathers. A two-year, $300,00 grant from Blue Cross Blue Shield of north Carolina funded renovations at the shelter, program staffing, hotel vouchers and money for up-front housing costs like rent and deposits for families after leaving the shelter.

Almost a year after Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina teamed up with five N.C. health systems to curb medical cost increases, the insurer announced this week that Charlotte’s two major health care systems have joined the plan.
