Winston-Salem, NC – Ahead of the upcoming Greensboro Swarm vs. Mexico City Capitanes December games, the Hispanic League, Swarm, Capitanes and Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina (Blue Cross NC) are teaming up to host a community event and provide meals to those in need within the Triad area.
The organizations will hold a meal distribution event at Monte De Rey Restaurant at 838-A1 South Main Street in Kernersville on Thursday, December 9, from 3:30 to 7:00 P.M. The first 100 families in attendance will receive a free family meal pack prepared by Monte De Rey and a $25 Compare Foods gift card.
The event will feature a meet and greet beginning at 5:30P.M. with mascots from both sports teams, the Swarm’s Swarmy and Capitanes’ Juanjolote, and True Blue, Blue Cross NC’s Healthy Blue Medicaid plan mascot.
NC Counts will be on location providing COVID-19 vaccinations from 3:30 to 6:30 P.M. Additionally, attendees will have a chance to win prizes, including tickets to the upcoming games, by spinning the Healthy Blue prize wheel.
“We are thrilled to offer this partnership with several organizations to help make a difference in the lives of families,” said Mari Jo Turner, executive director of the Hispanic League. “In addition to the meet & greet, healthy meals and vaccines, there will also be a community ID drive that begins at 3:30 pm for those needing a valid photo.”
“The hope is that this one-stop shop event can bring some holiday cheer to families in the Triad by way of a warm meal, convenient access to essential health services and fun, family-friendly activities,” said Leo Scarpati, community and diversity engagement program manager at Blue Cross NC. “We’re proud to be part of this collaboration that helps us carry out our mission of improving the health and wellbeing of all North Carolinians.”
The Swarm and Capitanes are set to play against each other on December 10 and 11 at the Greensboro Coliseum Complex Fieldhouse. Discounted game tickets will be available for purchase during the distribution event. Every ticket purchase comes with a free ticket for children ages 16 and under. A portion of the ticket sales will benefit the Hispanic League Scholarship Program.
“Not only are we excited to host Mexico City for their first visit to Greensboro, but we are elated that we can partner with Blue Cross NC, Hispanic League and Capitanes’ to give back to our community in some way,” Swarm President Steve Swetoha said. “This is just another unique way we can all work together to help families that are in need during this holiday season.”
"We want to thank Greensboro Swarm, Blue Cross NC, and Hispanic League for inviting us to participate in this community event,” said Rodrigo Serratos, Capitanes' President. “We are honored to help North Carolina families at a special time during the Christmas season. This season, we've been far from our home, fans, and families; and spending time with the North Carolina community will be a good moment for all of us.”
Those attending the event will be required to wear masks per local government Covid -19 guidelines. Masks and hand sanitizer will be provided to all who attend.
