DURHAM, N.C. – Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina (Blue Cross NC) released the following statement on Governor Roy Cooper’s signing of Senate Bill 808 which funds the state’s move to managed care for Medicaid.

Dr. Tunde Sotunde, President and CEO, Blue Cross NC: “Medicaid transformation is one of the most significant and positive changes North Carolina has ever made to our state’s health care system. In addition to creating up to 500 new North Carolina jobs, the move will improve the lives and health of more than 1.6 million people, save taxpayers over $200 million a year, and bring much-needed resources to tackle social factors – things like food insecurity, housing and access to transportation – that have a major impact on health outcomes.

“Under Medicaid managed care, beneficiaries will have a choice in their health coverage for the first time, with the ability to choose Blue Cross NC’s Healthy Blue plan. Through Healthy Blue, Blue Cross NC will bring 85 years of commitment and caring to many of North Carolina’s most vulnerable residents.”
