CHAPEL HILL, N.C. –Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina’s (BCBSNC) thriving mobile app HealthNAVSM1 comes to the Android market just as the smartphone platform becomes the U.S. market leader. Following the successful launch of the app for iPhone and iPad devices in October, the release of HealthNAV for Android allows BCBSNC to provide convenient health information for even more customers.

“We’ve received plenty of positive feedback on the HealthNAV mobile app for iPhones and iPads,” said John Roos, senior vice president and chief sales and marketing officer. “Expanding the mobile app to Android devices helps us get information in more of our customer’s hands so they can make quick, easy, informed decisions about their health care.”

androidHealthNAV for Android has four key functions:
  • An urgent care finder helps customers locate in-network urgent care centers as a more efficient, less expensive alternative to emergency room visits.
  • A prescription drug finder allows customers to compare average drug costs that their benefits cover while they are discussing options with their doctor, or in preparation for a visit.
  • Customer service access is just a click away from connecting customers and our customer service representatives to get questions answered quickly
  • A health notes section lets users store notes about personal and family health information.

“We’re working hard to provide our customers with new  tools that make it easier to connect with us,” Roos said. “We know they’re busy and have to make informed decisions about health care for themselves and their families.  The new Droid mobile app is just the latest way we are leveraging technology to give our customers a better experience with Blue Cross, but there is more coming.”

HealthNAV for the iPhone and iPad has been downloaded more than 7,000 times since its launch in October 2010.  A 2010 Distimo study reveals Android users are more likely to download free apps than other smartphone users. On Android, developed by Google, 57 percent of the apps downloaded are free, compared to 25 percent among all smartphone platforms.
