Approximately 1.2 million individuals in North Carolina1 will soon be making a decision about health care coverage. Recognizing health care reform is complex and the changes impact everyone differently, Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina (BCBSNC) has created Blue MapSM, an online tool found at bcbsnc.com, for North Carolinians to understand how the changes may affect their distinct situation.

There are many new factors and policies to consider before open enrollment begins in October including new health plans featuring essential benefits, eligibility to keep current plans, premium tax credits and cost sharing reductions. Additionally, this will be the first time purchasing insurance for many customers. Blue Mapasks users a few questions and applies the responses to provide a customized summary of information for individuals under the age of 65 to make an informed decision about coverage in 2014.

A personalized Blue Map will help customers understand:
  • the potential to qualify for subsidies
  • the benefits of  Affordable Care Act (ACA) plans
  • action points and key dates for open enrollment
In addition, a Blue Map for current BCBSNC customers will include:
  • whether their current plan is eligible to maintain grandfather status
  • a generalized rate impact for new 2014 plan
“Blue Map is designed to help individuals buying their own health insurance understand their options with a clear and concise summary personalized to their coverage needs,” states J. Michael Parkerson, vice president of marketing for BCBSNC.  “There are numerous changes associated with the Affordable Care Act and BCBSNC wants individuals to be ready to make an informed decision.”

Blue Map and other resources regarding health care reform are available online at bcbsnc.com/BlueMap.
