Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina (BCBSNC) and other Blue Cross and Blue Shield plans have received initial data from Anthem about customer impacts from the cyber attack announced in early February.
Anthem’s cyber attack did not impact BCBSNC’s systems. However, current or former Blue Cross and Blue Shield plan customers who received medical services or lived in one of the 14 states served by Anthem since 2004 may have been affected. BCBSNC customers who did not receive medical services or live in one of the states served by Anthem are not affected.
Based on data provided by Anthem:
- 180,204 current or former BCBSNC customers are affected.
- 69,266 of these consumers are N.C. residents.
- 77,143 are current BCBSNC customers.
- Fewer than one percent of these consumers may have had their Social Security numbers compromised.
While this is the most accurate information BCBSNC has at this time, these impacts could change slightly as Anthem’s investigation continues.
Anthem will notify all consumers affected directly via U.S. mail in the coming weeks and is offering two years of credit monitoring and identity protection services.
Any concerned customer can visit www.AnthemFacts.com or call 877-263-7995 to sign up for free identity protection. Consumers do not have to wait to receive formal notice; they can contact Anthem today to enroll if they have questions or concerns.
BCBSNC takes customers’ privacy very seriously, and has multiple layers of data security in place to actively monitor our systems on a regular basis. The company will continue to work closely with Anthem as this situation evolves.
