Senior Vice President, General Counsel and Corporate Secretary
King Prather is senior vice president, general counsel and corporate secretary of Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina (BCBSNC). In addition to his duties managing the Law Office at BCBSNC, which includes the Special Investigations and Fraud Unit, Prather oversees the company's Audit and Risk Management function and its Enterprise Security & Privacy department.
Prior to taking on his current responsibilities, Mr. Prather was responsible for assisting the company in implementing its Health Information Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) privacy and security policies, leading the company's corporate law and governance practice and supporting BCBSNC's Human Resources department with labor and employment matters.
Prior to joining BCBSNC in 2003, Mr. Prather practiced with the Raleigh law office of Hunton & Williams. Preceding that role, he was an executive with an internet start-up in Research Triangle Park, and also spent more than five years with the State of North Carolina negotiating technology agreements.
In addition to his duties at BCBSNC, Mr. Prather chairs the Executive Committee of the Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association's Legal Development Cooperative and is a member of the Board of Directors of the North Carolina Life and Health Insurance Guaranty Association. He also serves as the secretary of the separate and independent BCBSNC Foundation, a private not-for-profit foundation, and serves on the University of North Carolina at Asheville Board of Trustees and the North Carolina Central University Board of Visitors.
He is a member of the American Bar Association and the North Carolina Bar Association. He has been a member of the Town of Cary Athletics Advisory Committee for more than 10 years.
Mr. Prather has an economics degree from the University of Virginia and a juris doctor from the North Carolina Central School of Law. He is married to wife Pam and they have three children who are all proud graduates of UNC Asheville.
