DURHAM, N.C. – Dr. Von Nguyen, MD MPH, who has driven innovation for a private insurer and two federal health agencies, has been named Senior Vice President and Chief Medical Officer at Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina (Blue Cross NC).

Dr. Nguyen joined Blue Cross NC in May 2019 as Vice President of Clinical Operations and Innovations. In this role he worked closely with providers, members and teams across the enterprise to co-design and implement programs that put patients and caregivers first, promote collaboration and build on value-based initiatives. Dr. Nguyen has played an integral role in helping Blue Cross NC navigate the company’s response to COVID-19, and he will continue to drive Blue Cross NC forward in his new role as CMO.

Prior to Blue Cross NC, Dr. Nguyen worked for nearly seven years in various roles at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. He led investigations and response for disease outbreaks at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and served as a Senior Advisor in the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services’ (CMS) Innovation Center, supporting the implementation of value-based programs.

“Von is a fearless leader who exemplifies the passion, determination and grit necessary to continue our work towards better, simpler and more affordable health care for our members,” said Blue Cross NC President and CEO Dr. Tunde Sotunde. “He is the right leader at the right time as we build on our provider partnerships to accelerate moving from a fee-for-service model to value-based care through industry leading programs and initiatives.”

Dr. Nguyen will take on the Blue Cross NC role in November and lead areas that include care management, health care programs, behavioral health, clinical innovations and clinical effectiveness. His responsibilities will include Blue Premier, the company’s nationally recognized value-based care program, and other initiatives to collaborate with doctors and hospitals to improve quality, reduce costs and improve the patient experience.

“At Blue Cross NC, we are all focused on driving value, access and quality for our members and serving as a model across the country,” said Dr. Nguyen. “I am thrilled to step into this new role and continue driving change and innovation in health care for all North Carolinians.”

Dr. Nguyen has a bachelor’s degree in political science from Rice University, a master’s degree in public health from the University of Texas School of Public Health, a medical degree from the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School and completed his residency in Internal Medicine at New York-Presbyterian Hospital, Columbia University Medical Center.
